TITLE I
"Supporting Education by Nurturing Tomorrow"
Dear Teachers, Parents, Guardians and Community Stakeholders:
Welcome to Grant High’s TITLE I webpage and allow me to introduce myself; I’m Maria Ortiz, appointed Title I Coordinator for 2010-11. Our office is located in the GHS Career Center and we're always available to assist you during school hours.
Officially, it is as follows:
• Supplemental Federal funding for improving student achievement, especially in high-poverty schools
• A program which provides extra academic support and learning opportunities for children farthest from 
meeting challenging State standards

Once again, officially, my duties and responsibilities are:
- Under the direction of the principal or designee, provides support and assistance to school site teachers in the implementation of the Title I Program.
- Facilitate school-wide accountability with federal, state, and District policies regarding all aspects
of the Title I Program in constructing and revising the program's content skills, teaching methods and evaluation. - Organize and lead ongoing staff development for teachers, paraprofessionals, parents and volunteers.
- Respond to requests for information, develop training materials and provide professional development to staff and parent groups.
- Develop and maintain appropriate information systems related to electronic and paper files.
- Assist with the planning and organization of staff, parent, and community meetings.
- Prepare notices, documents and other communication related to English Learner programs.
NOW I’M REALLY CONFUSED - WHAT EXACTLY DO YOU DO,

I basically oversee the implementation of all aspects of the Title I program here at GHS and coordinate its related services so that staff, students and community members may access them. Some of the services/programs I take care of are:
- Compensatory Education Advisory Committee (CEAC), School Site Council (SSC) and English Learners Advisory Committee (ELAC) meetings.
- Beyond the Bell / Supplemental Educational Services (SES)
- Meal Applications (Eligibility/Benefits)
- GHS budget requests / management
- Professional Development / Conferences
- Field Trips
- GHS Parent Center activities

TITLE I Announcements SCHOOL SITE COUNCILThe School Site Council will meet at 3:30 p.m. in the Principal's Conference Room on the following dates (unless otherwise specified):
October 28, 2010 November 18, 2010 December 15, 2010 (on Wednesday for a Holiday Dinner with CEAC and ELAC in the Library at 6:00 p.m.) January 20, 2011 February 17, 2011 March 17, 2011 April 14, 2011 May 12, 2011 June 8, 2011 on Wednesday for a Holiday Dinner with CEAC and ELAC in the Library at 6:00 p.m.) Classes for ParentsChildren's Health Access and Medi-Cal Program (CHAMP) - Enrollment Event on Monday, December 13, 2010 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Parent Center. Everyone's invited to attend.
The following classes are offered to parents: English as a Second Language Class - Wednesday and Thursday - 8:45 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Nutrition classes with Cassidy Boesch from HealthCorps founded by Dr. Mehmet Oz, cardiac surgeon and Health Expert on the Oprah Winfrey Show - Every Tuesday from 9:00 a.m.to 10:00 a.m. in the Parent Center. Everyone's invited. Please contact Parent Center Director: Elizabeth Balyan (818) 756-2803 Millikan, Madison, Roy Rommer and other neighboring middle schools' parents are welcome to enroll in any of the classes offered to parents.
